The original 74" Hamboard Classic the giant longboard that turned heads on Shark Tank is officially back. And this time, it’s being built exactly where the story began: Southern California.

Production has returned to the U.S., and the boards are now being handcrafted from start to finish by BIRCH Longboards, owned and operated by longtime board‑builder Derek Horn. Derek has been shaping and manufacturing boards since 2008 under his previous brand, Koastal Skateboards. During those years, Koastal even produced the 60" Hamboard Logger deck, making this reunion feel like a natural full‑circle moment.

Now, after years of evolution, growth, and a shared history, Hamboards and BIRCH are bringing the 74" Classic home — not just back to the U.S., but back to the same Southern California roots where Hamboards first came to life.

Every board is built under one roof, by hand, with the same surf‑inspired spirit that made the original so iconic. The craftsmanship is tighter, the process is more intentional, and the soul of the board is exactly where it belongs.

The Classic is back — and it’s being made the way it always should have been.

HAMBOARD CLASSIC:

The Original 74" Classic deck is made of birch wood and is 6ft 2in long and 15in wide so it truly gives you space for surfing footwork. The ride that is shockingly familiar to longboard surfers and longboard SUP Surfers alike. This is truly the world’s finest surf style board on wheels. This board will transport you straight back to the surf line and help you master pop ups, drop knee turns, toes over nose, cut backs, bottom turns and hanging heels (if you’re daring).

Choose the HST truck set which suits your skill and style. All HST trucks give 30° degrees of board lean and allow the ultimate rail-to-rail flow They are mounted on massive 24mm riser blocks and clad with a set of Hamboards signature chocolate brown 97mm cast polyurethane wheels. Which HST Trucks should you get?

HST 40°/40° — "Dig and Carve"The Performance All-RounderSkill Level: Expert
This is the original setup that built Hamboards' reputation. If you're looking for deep carves and big turns with maximum versatility, this is the setup for you. The 40°/40° configuration delivers equal front and rear turning, letting you throw the tail of your board just like you're hitting the lip of a wave and carving back down the face. Once you're at speed, you have complete control over your ride—from easy cruising and technical footwork to wide-open shredding that digs deep into every turn. This is the ultimate performance setup for advanced riders who want the widest range of possibilities, whether you're seeking mellow flow or aggressive rail-to-rail carving that mirrors the most dynamic surf sessions.

HST 55°/20° — "Pump and Glide"The Flow SpecialistSkill Level: Intermediate
If you're looking for effortless pumping and that smooth glide-down-the-line feeling, this is the setup for you. The 55°/20° configuration creates the perfect balance of front drive and rear stability, making it ideal for practicing footwork and cross-stepping while maintaining deep rail control when you need it. Once you build speed, you can make that critical turn down the line and immediately transition into nose walking with more control and ease than ever before. You can still engage the rail and carve when the moment calls for it, but this setup prioritizes flow over power—perfect for riders who love the glide and want to focus on style, technique, and that meditative connection between board and rider.

HST 55°/0° — "Crosstep Noserider"The Traditional LoggerSkill Level: Beginner
If you're looking for maximum stability and authentic longboard tradition, this is the setup for you. The 55°/0° "log setup" locks your backend in place down the line, providing the ultimate platform for cross-stepping, footwork, and getting to the nose with confidence. While you can still engage the rail and make smooth turns when needed, this configuration is specifically designed for riders who want to master the classic art of noseriding and walking the board. This is the purest longboard experience—stable, predictable, and focused on the timeless style that defines traditional surfing, where getting to the nose and gracefully stepping back is the ultimate expression of flow and control.

The King Returns: How the Hamboards® Classic Longboard Came Home to California

Some partnerships are business decisions. Others feel like destiny.

When Derek Horn and I signed papers to bring Hamboards Classic production back to Southern California through his BIRCH® Longboards, it wasn't just another manufacturing deal. It was bringing the King of all Longboards back to where it belongs.

The Koastal Connection

Most people don't know this, but Derek and I go way back. Years ago, when Hamboards was still finding its footing, Derek was manufacturing our Logger decks through his company Koastal. He understood what we were building—not just skateboards, but a completely different way to surf on land. His craftsmanship spoke for itself.

Then Koastal closed its doors. Like so many American manufacturers, the economics pushed us overseas. We found capable factories in China, kept the quality high, and grew the business. But something was lost in that transition—a connection to the soul of what Hamboards represented.

The BIRCH Renaissance

Fast forward to 2025. Derek has built something special with BIRCH Longboards right here in Irvine, California. He's become one of the premier longboard manufacturers on the West Coast, known for his birch construction and meticulous attention to detail. We'd already been working together successfully on Lucid Grip products, and I watched his operation grow with genuine admiration.

Meanwhile, I was focused on building SUPSKATE®, my new brand that's taking land paddling in a completely different direction. The question kept nagging at me: what happens to Hamboards?

The answer was sitting right in front of me.

Why the Classic? Why Now?

The Hamboards Classic is where it all began—our 74-inch masterpiece that put land surfing on the map. For years, riders have called it the "King of all Longboards," and honestly? We've been too humble to claim that title.

But let's be real: the Classic earned that crown.

The Hamboards Classic is the King of all Longboards. And the King is coming home.

It's the board that proved you could truly replicate the feeling of longboard surfing on concrete. The HST truck system (which I still consider the heart and soul of what makes a Hamboard a Hamboard) delivers that authentic surf rail-to-rail carving that nothing else can match. No other longboard—regardless of length, truck design, or marketing hype—gives you that same pure surfing sensation.

Now, with Derek bringing it back to California in premium birch construction, handcrafted with the same obsessive attention to detail that built both our reputations? We're ready to own it.

The Painted Classic Collection

Derek isn't just making "a" Classic—he's launching with five distinctive colorways that honor Hamboards' heritage while pushing the aesthetic forward. Each Painted Classic features:

  • Premium birch construction manufactured in Southern California
  • Our patented HST truck system (the same technology that's defined Hamboards since day one)
  • Hand-crafted quality with Derek's BIRCH standards
  • A dual signature showing the collaboration between BIRCH and Hamboards
  • Serial numbered authenticity

These aren't replicas. These aren't knockoffs. These are genuine Hamboards Classics, manufactured to the exacting standards that made the brand legendary, now with the added soul of being handcrafted right here in California.

That first carve, that first deep rail turn that feels exactly like cutting back on a wave—there's nothing else like it. And now it's being crafted with the same pride and precision that California craftsmen have brought to surfboard manufacturing for generations.

Full Circle

There's poetry in Derek manufacturing Hamboards again. The same hands that shaped our early Loggers are now bringing the Classic back to California. The same commitment to quality, the same understanding of what these boards need to be.

For me, this partnership solves a problem I've been wrestling with: how do I build SUPSKATE without abandoning the Hamboards legacy? The answer is I don't have to choose. Derek keeps the Classic alive and thriving while I pour my energy into the next evolution of land paddling.

For Derek, it's a chance to manufacture the most iconic land surfing board ever created while building BIRCH into the premier longboard manufacturer on the West Coast.

For Hamboards riders—both the die-hards who've been with us since the beginning and the newcomers discovering land surfing for the first time—it means the Classic is back, better than ever, and made in America again.
